Grape Variety Moscato Rosa – Floral and Spicy Bouquet
Moscato Rosa is an old red grape variety and today ranks among the true rarities in viticulture. In its homeland South Tyrol it is cultivated only on very small vineyard areas; in Germany the variety has been officially approved for cultivation only since 2017.
The grape is a close relative of Moscato Giallo and belongs to the very small group of red bouquet varieties. Moscato Rosa typically produces expressive red wines with an intense, floral and spicy aromatic profile.
Its lush bouquet is reminiscent of rose petals and exotic fruit notes. Due to this distinctive aromatic profile, we vinify Moscato Rosa as a sweet red wine as well as a dessert wine of noble sweetness – in the form of a rosé Beerenauslese. Sweetness and aromatic intensity complement each other particularly harmoniously.
Moscato Rosa is a wine for dreaming and enjoyment. It pairs beautifully with spiced desserts, chocolate specialities, cocoa-based cakes as well as with aromatic cheese variations.
Vineyard Sites of Moscato Rosa at Weingut Fuchs
Our Moscato Rosa vines grow on an exposed south-facing slope at the “Schwarzer Herrgott” in the Zellertal on the Palatinate side of the estate. The warm, sheltered location enables this late-ripening variety to reach full maturity and develop its characteristic aromatics.

Origin of Moscato Rosa
Moscato Rosa is a very old autochthonous red grape variety whose origins are believed to lie in Sicily. Today it is cultivated mainly in South Tyrol, though still only in very small quantities.
Characteristics of the Variety
The variety is considered extremely demanding in cultivation and produces only small, often irregular yields. The small, loose bunches ripen very late.
On suitable sites it produces light ruby-coloured, aromatically dense red wines with a delicate Muscat bouquet and an intense scent of roses. This rare combination of colour and pronounced fragrance makes Moscato Rosa a genuine speciality.
